Daydreaming

Jun. 27th, 2008 03:22 pm

Here's my take on that "How many of these books have you read?" thing that's floating in the net right now.  (Bold the ones you've read; underscore the ones you love; italicize the ones you intend to read).

I've read 64 of the 98 titles; plan to read at least a few more; and am somewhat embarrassed that I haven't read more.  Supposedly the average adult has read only 6 of these titles.

I'm a book snob, I confess it, but I have to say I'm surprised at how few of these titles some of my LJ regulars have read.  Especially those who are among my favorite fanfiction authors.  (Seriously? You've never read To Kill a Mockingbird?)  Yes, it's not a perfect list, but it is a reasonable compilation of the classics plus some titles that inform today's pop culture.  So I'm kind of disappointed at how many of my regulars rather smugly declare that they've read 18 or 22 and don't intend to read further.

At long last, my list of recommended Supernatural fanfiction.

I've been collecting these links for many months, but thought I ought not to post anything until I wrote a nice summary of each piece.  But I've discovered that I'm as bad at summarizing others' stories as I am my own.  (In the ever-popular fanfiction.net refrain, "I suck at summaries.")  Also, I found myself too inclined to critique while I summarized, writing things like "I love the mood of this piece, but the characterization of Sam is wrong."  Better for you to decide those things for yourselves.  All I'll say is that I read dozens of Supernatural fanfiction pieces every week, and in my view, these are the very best.

Most, you'll note, are pre-series, since I find the back story of Supernatural to be the most compelling part of the drama.

You'll also note:  no Wincest, no boys sprouting wings or growing bellies, no cross-over (but only because I don't know any other fandom), no alternative/speculative/future fiction, and only a handful of female love interests.

Listed here in approximate chronological order.
